THE BUNKERS / BELGIUM

I am definitely ready to hunker down at this bunker! This magical spot is called The Bunkers and it first captured my attention because of its stunning architecture. It then drew me in even further when I saw it contained my dream kitchen inside! All of this perfection exists at this unique hotel property, The Bunkers, located in Belgium right in the heart of the countryside. This sophisticated escape seems to hit all the marks in my book to warrant a spot on my list of places I dream to stay at. Allow me to take you on a little tour and find out why.

The hotel is located on a unique property with loads of history and not all of it pleasant. In fact, the name of the hotel is because this property was actual bunkers! The Bunkers dates all the way back to 1785 when the Austrian emperor Joseph II built “Fort Hazegras” to protect the new Hazegras lock. The Germans also occupied this fort during both World Wars. 

But who doesn’t love a bit of history? I think the owners must! The De Bisscop family bought the estate back in 2012 and what a good purchase they made with such a wonderful example of architecture with a highest quality finishes smack in the middle of the polders at the Belgian seaside.

The De Bisscops worked with architects Govaert & Vanhouette from Bruges and Anversa from Antwerp to renovate the farm using the African wood Afromosia for the outside. For the garden design work, they worked with Léon Van Haesebrouck and all of the results look stunning. It now houses not only a family home but also their chickens, bees, and sheep. All of this means it provides fresh eggs and homemade honey in the breakfast at this beautiful venue.

The Bunkers’ team boasts it is the perfect spot to relax and rest, offering plenty of privacy. With amenities such as a gym, pool, sauna, all completely surrounded by nature you’re also guaranteed not to get bored. Who wants to join me because I think another trip to Belgium is in order!
