This is NYC. My home. A surprise can await you aro This is NYC. My home. A surprise can await you around every corner. A photographic moment at any turn. It is moments like these and images like this one that I can snap with my phone and still be a little bit of the photographer that I was in my younger days. Fun fact! I had a scholarship for photography in college and of late, have found myself pining for the good 'ole days when images weren't gone in hours off "stories" or shared without credit. The days where you had to wait to develop your negatives in the dark room and you printed each image by hand. The smell of the developer as you listened to music in that darkroom, your second home, while humming along to your favorite songs. Waiting to see if you had a "good one" and if the "burning and dodging" technique worked the way you hoped it would. I bet there are some people even wondering what I am talking about! Well, I have truly aged myself. But I don't care! I miss those days. So I decided to go for a walk around my city to capture some images today. It felt good. This is one of my captures. I am so glad to be here. My city. My home. My people. We can do this, NYC. We are little subdued, a little pensive, a lot hurting, but we are New Yorkers. We will rise again stronger than before. This genius NYC- based artist paints an image of the sunrise or sunset from his window every day on the cover of that same day’s NY Times. I’m smitten. The idea began as a way to document lockdown and has now become a truly mesmerizing series of paintings. ⚡️Another “typical of Tanya” long post ale ⚡️Another “typical of Tanya” long post alert! Another #myinteriormonologue kind of post! ⚡️I’ve taken to long, soul searching walks as an homage to one of my dearest friends who always took walks along this stretch of beach until Covid-19 forced her and her family’s hand and they decided to move back to Sweden. I miss her and her family every day especially when I’m out in the Hamptons. Especially when I’m walking along the beach out here that holds so many of my life’s special memories. Somehow I’ve been coming here for over a decade with everyone I miss right now and cannot see in person for some unknown amount of time. My besties from London, my Mom and the rest my family in Chicago, my besties from LA, my dog who passed away in London, my besties from Chicago, from Colorado, Sweden...it feels endless and they are all so far away. ❤️ I found myself tearing up about it all as I walked along. Then I thought about not living a life where one feels frustrated about what one cannot control. We have to do what we can to make our own universe and the world we live in a more positive place. This too shall pass. We will come out the other side of this and hopefully try to find moments we will reminisce about this conflicting time. I might find myself walking along this beach again one day feeling so thankful for the memories I created during 2020 on this beach. Many walks along this sand listening to the waves and dreaming up my next steps for my business, might be one. Another might be just wishing I had the time again in one place without planes and “places to be” and house guests and dinner reservations and work-related travel stress or just having to drive back to the city in bad traffic. Maybe I’ll wish I could be free of that again and then I’ll shed a few tears and remind myself not to get upset about things I cannot control...sense a pattern? Ok. That’s all. Love this photo I took of this moment and of these clouds on my favorite beach. Sending you all lots of love and good wishes for a wonderful weekend. Enjoy this time as best you can. CRUSH CAMPAIGN #13: John Derian & Astier de Villa CRUSH CAMPAIGN #13: John Derian & Astier de Villatte⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @astierdevillate was created by Ivan Pericoli and Benoît Astier de Villatte in 1996 and is manufactured in their Paris workshop. For many years now, I have collected their pieces and there is never a trip to Paris where a trip to their store isn’t on my itinerary. I have many, many pieces and can honestly say it is just about the only thing I collect. Yes, it is true. I have a real “collection” of Astier de Villatte!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ They are one of the only studios to keep the traditional artisanal ceramic product in Paris still going after beginning in the 18th century. Known for their one of a kind ceramics, each is constructed in Paris from black terra-cotta clay and finished with a soft white glaze. They partnered with John Derian, of @johnderiancompany, who has retail stores located in New York City. This collection is filled with John’s most beloved images paired perfectly against the crispness of the tell-tale white finish of Astier de Villatte ceramics.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you ever find yourself invited to dinner at my house, you can be sure that dinner will be served on Astier de Villatte. Now I just need to learn how to cook! I am so happy! This cookbook! This arrived as a su I am so happy! This cookbook! This arrived as a surprise for me and it’s the best surprise ever! Falastin is Palestinian 🇵🇸 recipes from my father’s homeland by one of my chef heroes of all time, @sami_tamimi of Ottolenghi fame and @tara.wigley! This is the food of my childhood. My grandmother aka Teta would visit us in Chicago and I’d find her in the kitchen singing in Arabic while she cooked. All. Day. Long. Nothing smelled better on this earth then the scent of her cooking. She didn’t speak much English but it didn’t matter. Believe me, we sure spoke the same language when she cooked! A love of food crosses all barriers. So imagine my absolute delight when I received a package the other day with this cookbook inside. It was sent to me by one of my nearest and dearest friends @toastncandy just to make me smile. I sure smiled! And shed some tears! It filled my heart with such joy to open this stunning homage to my childhood and my favorite foods and to know that a friend like Nancy thought to send it to me! I don’t talk much about my father’s heritage. My heritage. My father spent a lot of my childhood being “American” and I don’t talk much about where he is from. I know that being a Palestinian refugee, my father spent most of his life without a home or even a passport until he moved to the US at the age of 19. So he assimilated as best he could and my mom being a non-Arab from the south side of Chicago, we just didn’t talk much about his previous life in Palestine or in Egypt where he grew other than when my Teta visited. Then the house was filled with scents and spices and music and a language that made my heart swell and my stomach celebrate. I think it’s time to learn how to make some of these dishes myself and pass this on to my family. Home is where the heart is. Now more than ever. Th Home is where the heart is. Now more than ever. This dining room of ours has had so many new memories created around it as of late. Since March and the lockdown, it hasn’t hosted any big dinner parties, but it has seen more family-only meals in these past few months than it has seen in it’s lifetime! Fierce Uno matches (the young one usually wins) and even fiercer Monopoly games (I usually win. I’m good. Just sayin’...). There has been lots of laughter and story telling and quite a few tears of frustration have been shed here and some shared sadness as well. That’s home. I love this home we built. I love filling it with things I plan to keep forever and hand down to the next generation. 🖤 Through all of this home time and quarantining and isolation in our “bubble”, I’m really seeing the silver lining in this dark cloud of time for so many of us in our country and in the world. So much feels like it’s all so wrong. CRUSH CAMPAIGN #12: Cake Atelier Amsterdam⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This might be one of my most favorite discoveries. In fact, it may be one of my most favorite finds, ever. If you like cake, weddings, and flowers, this is a match made in heaven. The epic talent I want to showcase here is Natasja Sadi, founder and baker at @cakeatelieramsterdam, and she is the force behind some of the most amazing wedding cake and flower creations on earth. Natasja has always had an affinity for all aspects of a wedding. She states, “ever since I was a little girl I’ve been madly in love with elegant princess dresses and fancy flower bouquets.” Flowers, however, are her favorite. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Natasja is known for her delicate and intricate keepsake sugar flowers as well as her weekly Sunday posts on her amazing arrangements utilizing both real and sugar flowers in blue delft pottery she has collected. She thanks her design background for her attention to detail and ability to replicate the construction of each petal of a flower with delicate precision. I truly have never seen anything like it! And Natasja takes pleasure in it: "if people wonder what is real and what is sugar? CRUSH CAMPAIGN #11: Spinelli Kilcollin⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @spinellikilcollin was founded by husband-and-wife team Yves Spinelli and Dwyer Kilcollin out of their garage on the east side of Los Angeles in 2010. In the beginning of his design journey, Spinelli was searching for a minimal take in a world of ornate jewelry. Inspired by an architectural standpoint, he created these set of linked rings in different weights to be worn a handful of different ways - stacked or spread across the fingers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, the brand has expanded into eyewear and even furniture with the same values intact.
