At Interior Monologue, we believe handmade is the best made. Our mission is to provide a collection of makers that you can trust – handmade excellence and ethical production. We think it’s important to understand who made the things we love. Our hope is that this collection connects you directly with our favorite makers and their one-of-a-kind stories.
The KLIMCHI story begins centuries ago in the small city of Kamenický Šenov in the Czech Republic. In the 16th century, local townspeople began experimenting with glassmaking to support their families and over the years Kamenický Šenov glassmakers became renowned for their craft and quality of glass. The KLIMCHI factory was established in 1905 and it is the second oldest glassworks in the city. The KLIMCHI ethos is firmly rooted in paying tribute to the past and honoring traditional glassmaking techniques.
You know the old expression “Home is where the hobnail is?” No? Well hear me out, because I am about to make a serious case for adding dramatic hobnail pieces to your glassware collection.
Introducing the Black Hobnail Jug and Black Hobnail Tumblers from KLIMCHI. These stylish yet functional pieces are the perfect dramatic touch to any table setting. What I love most about this glassware is how it manages to straddle the line between edgy boldness and traditional design, all handmade by expert artisans.
I was immediately struck by the impeccable craftsmanship and creativity coming out of this small, family-owned glass factory in Kamenický Šenov, Czech Republic. However, what is most impressive and important to me is the long legacy of glassmakers that KLIMCHI honors.
The KLIMCHI factory was built in 1905 and is still operating today using the same techniques that have been perfected over the years, including mouth-blowing and hand-shaping the glass. Glassmaking is built into the rich history of Kamenický Šenov. In response to poor farming conditions, townspeople developed glassmaking skills all the way back in the 16th Century and now the city is renowned for high-quality Bohemian crystal. The KLIMCHI factory is the second oldest in the city and holds immense historical value. French engineers actually built steel structures for the Eiffel Tower in what is now the KLIMCHI factory.
The team of glassmakers and designers at KLIMCHI stand firmly on the traditions of artists who came before them and uphold impeccable standards for glass quality and craftsmanship. All to say, not only have I added KLIMCHI’s Black Hobnail glassware to my dining table, now I am itching to go visit the factory and see these glassmakers in action.
